This chest is truly some type of separately handmade device chest, carpenter's or other tradesman's chest, rather than a travel trunk. The trunk companies did not make chests of this type and there is no hardware on it that can be traced or linked to any trunk company or other manufacturer. Trunk makers used many sorts of special hardware and corner clamps and braces, but they did not make use of screws to attach them. This chest has a mix of screws and rivets or huge head nails. It is very hard to identify the true age of a chest like this, especially from images due to the fact that of the generic hardware, but by the style of the hasp, manages and braces My appraiser said he would approximate that this was made at some point from the very early to mid 1900's and a few pieces of the metal could have been added even behind that. Because of all of that my appraiser has actually had a difficult time to put a value on this chest. He has actually recommended and seen a variety of comparable chests over the years in lots of places and usually the costs vary from about $300 to $500. Tidied up more or refinished and in a retail store the price would probably be a little greater or closer to $800 due to the fact that of the age and distinct nature of this piece.
