Description:

I am offering a Refurbished Mid-1900’s 4” Wet Magnetic Compass mounted in a 4½” gimbaled ring. Compasses of this size and design were often used as a backup compass or in a lifeboat. This unit is made of brass and mounted in a 5¾” square x 4¼' deep mahogany dove tail case and lid with brass hardware. The 3” compass card is signed with an interlaced "WC", which indicates it was built by the prestigious WILCOX CRITTENDEN COMPANY based in Connecticut. It seems to read accurately but has lost some liquid (distilled water), which is probably due to evaporation as there doesn't appear to be a leak. The missing liquid caused some distortion in the photos that looked like cracked glass. The bottom of the compass bowl is stamped "MADE IN U.S.A." "1-3". Your guess is as good as mine what 1-3 means. This 3½ pound functional artifact is the perfect example of quality U.S. craftsmanship. Additional Nautical Items Available - Please Call Cliff @ 760-942-2025 For More Information.
