FOGHORN - Antique English Rotary - WOOD CASE
No Longer Needed
I am offering an antique English "Norwegian Pattern" Foghorn. During dense fog a ship’s crewmember was assigned to crank this device (at certain intervals) especially in congested waterways. Based on the design and materials used it was built in England in the early 1900’s. It features a 4” diameter copper horn (with brass bezel) mounted in a 21 "x 15" x 8" knotty pine case with dovetail ends and tongue and groove sides held together which are held together with brass screws. The crank side panel is easy to remove for service and repairs and has this original stenciled information: “NORWEGIAN” “PATTERN” “ROTARY FOGHORN”. The brass crank assembly appears to be original and there are remnants of the instructions still attached to the top, but leather carry strap has been replaced. The horn sounds normal when cranked but could have some minor air loss, which is typical for its age. This twenty-one pound nautical artifact is a perfect example of British maritime history.
