No Longer Needed
Refurbished antique USA BRANDIS Sextant. Navigational devices of this type were used to determine a ship’s position (latitude and longitude) from the observation of the heavenly bodies. Based on the information included on the unit and case, it was built for the U.S. Navy in 1941. The mahogany dovetail case measures 10" x 10" x 5½", with brass and steel hardware including a lock (no key). The inside of the lid is stamped “BRANDIS & SON’S INC.” "754 -758 LEXINGTON AVENUE” “BROOKLYN N.Y.” and has the original Certificate of Inspection dated “3/14/41” attached. Both of the serial numbers on the certificate match the sextant. This sextant has a 6" radius arm plus a graduated brass arc, with inlaid silver, which is stamped with serial number “5577” and engraved “U.S. NAVY” “N” “4485”. The silvered scale is graduated every 20 minutes from -5° to 185° and read by vernier, with a tangent screw and magnifier. The accessories include an adjusting key, short and long telescopes, observing tube, screw driver, and one eye shade. There is no apparent damage to the sextant which shows very limited use. It is in exceptional condition considering its advanced age. This 7 pound nautical artifact is the perfect example of superior U.S. craftsmanship and is a rare piece of U.S. Naval maritime history.
