Black Minorca chicks for sale at Week Feed and Seed Aiken SC.1718 Richland Aveue East, Aiken SC 29801, 803 649 XXXXOriginally called the Red Faced Black Spanish, the Minorca is the largest and heaviest of the Mediterranean breeds. The breed is considered rare.The breed originates from Spain in the 1780s and is named after the island of Minorca.They are usually hardy birds but their large combs are prone to frostbite, but will do fine if kept under cover on the coldest nights.They are very tolerant of hot weather and prefer dry conditions. Males weigh around 8 lbs while the females are 6 ½ lbs in weight.In George Orwell's 1945 novel Animal Farm, three Black Minorca hens are mentioned rebelling against Napoleon's regime on the farm.They were a favourite of Lawrence of Arabia.They are year round layers of very large white eggs, especially during the winter months.Minorcas mature quickly and begin crowing sooner than other breeds.Their appearance is striking with their long, strong bodies, full tails, upright red combs and wattles and large white ear lobes.The Minorca thrives on human contact, especially if handled and hand fed often while young and has a wonderful temperament.
