Expanding on the breakthroughs of III, Zeppelin fuse their stunning acid rock with a magical, rural English folk that gives the record an impressive scope. Even at its most standard-- the muscle, traditionalist "Rock and Roll"-- the cd has a grand sense of drama, which is just deepened by Robert Plant's growing fixation with mythology, religion, and the occult. Plant's mysticism caps on the spooky folk ballad "The Battle of Evermore," a mandolin-driven tune with haunting vocals from Sandy Denny, and on the impressive "Stairway to Heaven." Of all of Zeppelin's tunes, "Stairway to Heaven" is the most famous, and not unjustly. Structure from a simple fingerpicked guitar to a storming torrent of guitar riffs and solos, it encapsulates the whole album in one song. Which, of course, isn't really marking down the remainder of the cd. "Going to California" is the group's finest folk song, and the rockers are constantly inventive, whether it's the complex, multi-layered "Black Dog," the pounding hippie satire "Misty Mountain Hop," or the funky riffs of "Four Sticks." But the closer, "When the Levee Breaks," is the one song really equal to "Stairway," helping provide IV the feeling of an impressive. An apocalyptic slice of urban blues, "When the Levee Breaks" is as frightening and powerful as Zeppelin ever got, and its seismic rhythms and layered characteristics show why none of their imitators might ever equal them.
