Vintage 1950 Hotel Commodore Glass Ashtray

Doylestown, PA

Heavy clear glass ashtray with royal blue lettering bearing the name of 1 of the most famous hotels in the United States: Hotel Commodore. Built in 1919 on 42nd Street in New York City across from the majestic Grand Central railroad terminal, the hotel was named for Cornelius Vanderbilt, who acquired the nickname "Commodore" while amassing a $100 million fortune in the transportation industry. The sailing ship logo on the ashtray symbolizes Vanderbilt's early days as a ferry operator around Manhattan, before he moved on to steamboats and railroads. The vast 2,000-room Hotel Commodore was at its opening the 2nd largest hotel in the world and was a legendary host to everyone from F. Scott Fitzgerald to Richard Nixon until Donald Trump turned it into the Grand Hyatt in 1980. Ashtray was acquired in 1950.Very good vintage condition. Light surface scratches, few slight dings that are smooth (some may have been manufacturing blemishes). Lettering still clear with little wear.Bottom marked: "Hotel Commodore"5.25" DIA x 1" H
