Samuel Edwin Armour (1890-1964) Oil Landscape Painting

Location:
Johnston, RI
Description:

Welcome. For your consideration is a vintage oil landscape painting by Samuel Edwin Armour (1890-1964). This original impressionist painting captures the splendid seasonal beauty of Autumn in New England with its distinctive vibrant fall foliage. The painting was completed on a masonite panel and inscribed with the artist's name on the back of the panel, S.E. Armour. I initially acquired three paintings by this artist from the artist's son, Hibbard Edwin Armour at an estate sale in Massachusetts, this being the last one that I have put up for sale. For the viewers benefit I included a few images of the artist in his studio and painting "en plein aire" with his students. The painting was not dated, I am estimating it to be from the 1930's-1950's time period. It is in excellent vintage condition. Under a black light it shows no signs of paint loss, in-painting or repair. Unframed the painting measures 13" in height x 16" wide and together with the vintage wooden frame it measures 18" x 21". The handsome vintage frame has a depth of 1 3/4" and is in overall good condition with some minor surface abrasions and chipping consistent with its age, but as you can see from the pictures it displays beautifully. This vintage impressionist painting is an excellent example of this artist's work. As mentioned, it came directly from the estate of the artist's son, Hibbard Edwin Armour. The father, Samuel E. Armour named his son Hibbard after Aldro Hibbard, one of the founding fathers of the famous art colony in Rockport, Massachusetts. Samuel E. Armour was a respected artist himself, he too was a part of the group of artists who established the art colony. His close relationship with Aldro Hibbard is how his son Aldro became Aldro Hibbard's namesake. As for the artist, Samuel Edwin Armour was born in Kibburn, England in 1890. He emigrated to the United States after the turn of the century and lived most of his life in Massachusetts. He became interested in art at an early age, often sketching his childhood experiences. Samuel enlisted in the United States Army during World War 1 and received a Purple Heart for his action in France. While he was serving overseas he continued with his art, often drawing and painting sketches of his battlefield experiences as a US Army doughboy. In fact, when he returned from the War he submitted some of those sketches in his artist thesis for entrance into the Federal Board at the Massachusetts Normal Art School. After graduating from the Normal Art School, Samuel went on to have a long successful career as an artist. He established his own gallery and became of popular teacher with many successful artists seeking guidance and training from him. Samuel Edwin Armour passed away in Massachusetts in 1964.
