For sale here is an old violin, as pictured.Description: This is a half-size violin, measuring about 21 1/4" long overall, 12 1/4” body length and 6 7/8" wide at the widest point. The top is spruce, the back, sides and neck are maple. The purling is inked. The bass bar is carved from the top wood — not glued in. The neck passes through the ribs instead of being glued into a separate block, but pieces have been added to the interior sides of the neck to give the appearance of a separate block. The lower rib is one piece. The pegs are of a very old style (but two are missing). There is no label, but a handwritten inked inscription on the back says, as far as I can make out, “Oswald Pearson, maker, ??? Auckland.”Condition: As seen in the pictures, this violin needs a major restoration. The biggest problem is that the button has broken off of the back. Someone attempted to repair this with screws, with the result that more of the back broke off. I do not have the missing pieces.In addition, there are several minor top cracks at the F holes, the back is off the instrument, there is some minor wear of the top edges and the fingerboard projection is so low that it is touching the top, Though it is dirty, the (original) varnish is mainly intact with just a bit of wear slightly below the center of the back. The condition of the violin can best be assessed by looking at the pictures. Look at them; they are part of the description.In addition to correcting these problems, to be made playable, this violin would also need standard set-up: sound post, bridge, tail piece, strings, chin rest, etc. Please contact me if you have any questions or if you want more pictures.
