I would like to share my experience about the things that I found that helped my children with their acid reflux and milk intolerance.When my boys were babies they suffered severly with digestive problems. With my oldest child I was at first told he just had colic but later I was told he had acid reflux and later still he was diagnosed with MSPI (milk/soy protein intolerence). He often had blood in his stools and sometimes screamed in pain for up to 18 hours a day. We found that Nutramigen ( an expensive formula that has the proteins extensively broken down in it) helped a lot. He also took Prevacid. (An acid reducer) I was told that most likely all my children would have these problems.Although we wanted more children, I didn't look forward to it. When we had our second son I tried to strictly avoid milk but by a week old he was already having acid reflux. He too was put on Prevacid and did a lot of screaming in pain. When he was 8 weeks old I gave up on nursing and gave him the Nutramigen also. Both of my children continued to have acid reflux and had to be on Prevaid. When my youngest was 8 months old someone suggested that I try giving them alkaline water to help with their reflux. I really didn't like my children taking Prevacid so we tried it. We were very impressed at the results. Soon we had both our children off the medicine and just drinking the alkaline water.Even though they continued to have some digestive problems I was just happy that they weren't taking any medicine and I found that the more water they drank the less problems they had. I felt frustrated though and wanted to find out what was causing their stomaches to produce too much acid. I felt that there surely HAD to be a cause but I didn't know where or how to find out or if I would ever find out. Finally someone suggested I call Shan Stratton (the nutritionist for many professional athletes) to see if he could help me. That call to him changed our lives!!! Here is what he told me... He was impressed that my boys were drinking alkaline water because he feels it is vitally important to everyones health. He said that when they drank the water it neutralized the overproduction of acid in the stomach. The reason though that their stomaches were producing too much acid was because they were enzyme and probiotic deficient. We need enzymes in our stomach to aid in digesting our food. If we do not have enough, our stomaches will react be producing more and more acid to try to break down that food. In doing that, it creates too much acid therefore we get acid reflux, indigestion, heart burn etc.. Most babies are born with enough enzymes and throughout time their bodies continue on their own to produce more. But if a mother is low on enzymes then she will not have enough to pass on to her baby and then her baby will be deficient also. All foods have enzymes in them to aid in breaking them down... unless we cook them. Anytime we cook or process food we kill the enzymes in it. Years ago people ate more raw fruits and vegetables than we do today. Today we eat mostly cooked or processed foods and even though our body produces some enzymes on its own it can't produce enough to compensate for our way of eating. So by adding an enzyme supplement to our body we can greatly reduce and often eliminate digestive problems. Probiotics are good live bacteria that live in our digestive tract. They coat and protect the lining of our entire digestive tract and also aid in in food digestion. When we take antibiotics they can't decipher between good and bad bacteria so they kill them both. So therefore we always need to replenish our good bacteria after taking antibiotics. Without probiotics our digestive tract is left unprotected and thus causes digestion problems. It is very important to take enzymes and probiotics together.Probiotics are something that we receive when we are born. The baby first picks up on these as it comes down the birth canal. It also picks these up from nursing and physical touch. For the first 3-6 months of a baby's life its body works hard at building up its probiotics. If a baby is born c-section it can give the baby a slow start in making these and also if it isn't nursed it can put it behind. Even if a baby is born naturally and is nursed, it can still suffer from digestive problems because all of their probiotics are not fully developed. This is often why babies suffer from "colic" in the first few months of life.Shan told me that he sold a product called Digestive Health (DH) that contains both probiotics and enzymes and I quickly ordered some. Within a very short period both of my boys started sleeping through the night pain free!!! Today they can eat anything! I no longer sit up at night with a crying child wondering, "What did I let him eat today that I shouldn't have?". I began to have hope for my future children. I was no longer afraid to have another baby. I too started taking this supplement. I became pregnant shortly after and took the Digestive Health the whole time and still am. I now have a 4 month old baby girl that has ABSOLUTELY NO digestive problems whatsoever!!!!
