THIS IS A WONDERFUL CAST IRON LANTERN THAT WAS USED ON THE ERIE BARGE CANAL. I BOUGHT THIS FROM AN ELDERLY MAN AT HIS SALE AND HE SAID A FRIEND OF HIS BOUGHT SEVERAL OF THESE AT AN AUCTION AND HE GAVE HIM ONE OF THEM. HE SAID IT WAS USED ON THE ERIE/BARGE CANAL IN SYRACUSE, NY. IT DOES HAVE A NAME ON THE TOP AREA, BUT IT IS HARD TO READ. IT IS ALL CAST IRON. THE LIGHT IS CLEAR AND IN GOOD CONDITION. I AM NOT SURE IF IT ORIGINALLY USED OIL, BUT I THINK WHOEVER USED IT LAST PUT KEROSENE IN IT. IT IS VERY HEAVY ... IT WEIGHS 25 #'s. IT IS A VERY NEAT AND OLD NAUTICAL LANTERN !!THIS IS SOME INFORMATION SOMEONE WROTE TO ME:.The top states Dressel Arlington, NJ USA. The side of the top states Mohawk Lamp and beneath, New York State Canals. This is a channel marker made use of on canals, likely the Erie Canal. The bracket inside held a red glass cylinder that fit over the brackets and made the light glow red through the clear fresnel lens during the night. It is painted red for daytime. Dressel is a well known light lantern maker, including ship and railroad lights. Hope this assists.
