ANTIQUE (1920-30s) HEDSTROM UNION CO. WICKER BABY CARRIAGE W / WINDOWS. This product is a remarkable early child carriage, made by Hedstrom Union Company. Research suggests that it is from the very early 1900s. The company was formed (see details. below) in 1915, and combined with the Union Company in 1922. It still has a partial label on the bottom of the seat, as well as a decal on the frame. It will make a terrific display piece, as is, or an excellent restoration task. The carriage is a Cadillac of the times. It has a wicker basket, with two windows, as well as showcases levered brakes, seat and foot adjusters, spring "shocks", adjustable cover, and lined inside. There is no mattress or cushion. The label on the seat bottom is partly torn, however Hedstrom can be clearly seen, in addition to the number 211, which might be a model. Shuffleton, and Walter Beaman founded the Hedstrom Company, Gardner, Massachusets in 1915. The company moved numerous times in its early years, lastly finding on Main Street in 1925. It specialized in the maker of clothing dryers' hardware and wheels for bassinets and baby cribs. In 1919 Hedstrom got an interest in the Union Manufacturing Company, established 2 years earlier by William Carlson, Oscar E. Fowelin, and Ernest Johnson. The company made reed-bodied baby carriages and hoods. Hedstrom and Union merged in 1922 to become Hedstrom Union Company. In 1928 Children's Vehicle Company of Templeton was gotten. Hedstrom Union Company leased a plant in Fitchburg in1936. Labor troubles in 1950 resulted in the closing of the Gardner and Fitchburg centers. AS MOST ITEMS THAT ARE 100 YEARS OLD, THIS PIECE HAS NORMAL WEAR AND TEAR. THE WICKER IS IN EXCELLENT CONDITION, IT HAS BOTH GLASS WINDOWS (ONE PIECE REPLACED), ALL HANDLES, KNOBS, AND MECHANICS WORK WELL. THE FABRIC IS IN GOOD-VG CONDITION, WITH A FEW WEAR MARKS AND RIPS. THE FRAME IS WELL AGED, WITH PATINA RUST, BUT IS STRAIGHT AND SOUND. THE FRONT WHEELS HAVE GOOD RUBBER, WHILE THE BACK WHEEL RUBBER IS IN POOR CONDITION.
