1950s Collegeville Tiger Costume Child's Large w/Box

Price:
$30
Location:
Waterbury, CT
Description:

Our best recollection is that our tiger costume was worn in 1955 or 1956. It is in its original box, marked:Collegeville CostumesHallowe'enPartiesMasqueradeThe price 2.98 is stamped on the box lid. The box is marked Made in U.S.A. and its label says:TIGERLARGE (12-14)2100 (CHILD)The costume includes a one-piece tiger suit with a tail that is about 23 inches long, a hood, and a mask. The tiger suit has black ties at the back of the neck and the hood has ties for under the chin. We think the suit and hood are flannel. There were some soil marks on the costume. The stiff tag that was at the back of the neck has been clipped off, and this may be the place where the fabric content and any washing instructions were printed. We have gently hand washed the costume in cold water and Woolite. We air dried it; we did not put it in the dryer. There are still some soil marks remaining. We took some measurements with the costume flat on the floor, as shown in our photos. The leg inseam is about 20 inches long. The arm seam that runs from the bottom of the arm hole to the end of the sleeve is just over 15 inches long. We measured the entire length of the tiger suit from the seam at the top of the shoulder down to the bottom of the leg and it is about 47.25 inches long. We measured from one side seam to the other. This measurement was taken across the back of the suit just below the opening. It measures 19 inches. We measured the shoulders in a similar fashion, across the back of the suit, from one arm to the other -- 19.5 inches. The mask is stiff and it appears that its features are hand painted, so we have not attempted to clean it. It is held on with a piece of black elastic, which has knotted ends. There is some wear along the sides of the mask, especially next to the elastic. On one side, there are two holes for the elastic. The mask has been folded in half inside the box for all these years, so we have put some white tissue paper stuffing behind it for some photos. The box is intact with some wear, particularly along the edges and at the corners. The cellophane is intact and still glued in place.
