1800’s BARBIZON Original Oil Painting Signed, N. Diaz

Location:
Commerce City, CO
Description:

Antique Original Oil Painting Signed N. Diaz | 19th Century | 25”X 19” FramedGorgeous original painting from the 1800s. It’s in beautiful condition and well taken care of. The painting was done on stretched canvas/linen and fitted into the original wooded frame. Together they have been fitted into the gilded, period frame. The outer frame is also very old and has bits of imperfections but nothing major nor anything that interferes with the integrity of the piece. It’s quite a feeling to hold a piece of such talent from long ago in your hands. To see the layer of paint on top of linen held together by nails on wood from a chopped down, nearby tree. The colors still look fresh and vibrant. The strokes can easily be seen. I took the photos myself that you see and have not been altered in any way. I got very close so you can see the hairlines in the artwork given it’s age but please note this is not detectable from a normal vantage point. The painting itself measures 19.3 inches long, 13.5 inches tall and 0.75 inch depth. When framed, the art piece measures 24.5 inches long, 19 inches tall, 2.25 inch depth. The provenance is a bit of a mystery as this may have been with the original owner & family for most of its life. The original boarded frame has a sticker with the number 3151. There is also an ink stamp behind that I am unable to decipher. A few inches below, there appears to have once been a sticker that has long faded. Within that, I can make out carved letters of either CD or CRD I believe. I’m sure there’s many more mysteries and origin hints within that a professional could spot but this is all that I have been able to determine. Because of this, I cannot guarantee it was Diaz himself or rather by the hand of one of his students or acquaintances at the Barbizon School. The Barbizon school of painters were part of an art movement toward Realism in art, which arose in the context of the dominant Romantic Movement of the time. “The Barbizon school was active roughly from 1830 through 1870. It takes its name from the village of Barbizon, France, on the edge of the Forest of Fontainebleau, where many of the artists gathered. Most of their works were landscape painting, but several of them also painted landscapes with farmworkers, and genre scenes of village life.” The latter is what is depicted in this particular piece. If you are unfamiliar, please do read about Diaz and his time at this school and how amazing it all really is. Fun fact… there’s a horse in this painting and he’s hard to see, until you do! He’s beautiful and that’s been one of my favorites details within this piece. I paid much more for this than am selling it for on here but it should be in a home where it’ll be admired.Kind Regards,Jae
