E.S. TINGATINGA is a Tanzanian artist who painted 1967 into1972. He initiated a form of street art that continued to grow and develop after his death. As the Tingatinga school itself developed and the works of its painters found their ways around the world, there came a demand for original works by ES Tingatinga himself. That supply was severely limited because of Edwardo's brief professional life and the lack of valuation of his paintings at and after his death. It was and is still traditional to copy and to imitate his work. However some collectors demanded originals so some painters obliged by painting copies, putting E.S. Tingatinga on the painting and selling it as an original.One of the artists who most successful at this was David Mzuguno. Mzuguno himself was originally a contemporary artist with Tingatinga. They began painting at the same time and Mzuguno did not begin to study Tingatinga work until near the time of Tingatinga's death. He came to master the style and worked with other Tingatinga artists. In the 1980s he produced paintings that he sold to collectors as original works by Tingatinga. One of the primary collectors of his forgeries noticed in a newly "discovered original Tingatinga" that the painting contained a license plate on a car that would not have existed before Tingatinga's death.These two paintings are good examples of one of the styles that Mzuguno created during his period of channeling Tingatinga's spirit. These paintings are characteristic enough to be their own style. I recently saw one auctioned in 2023 for $1,700 USD. The painting was auctioned as "the signature on the painting says 'E.S. Tingatinga'." The painter, David Mzuguno is an extraordinary artist inhis own right. The portion of his workthat happened while channeling the spirit of ES Tingatinga is remarkable. By the time he did this work his skills hadsurpassed that of the original works; not that he was an intrinsically superiorartist than Tingatinga, but Tingatinga only had 4 years to learn, develop andpractice painting before his death. Mzuguno started with the inspiration of hiswork and over a decade more of practice developing it. These works copy of a ESTingatinga original style and content with some additional touches added to make it look used andaged.
