Signed (monogrammed) by Miyoji Sano (佐野巳世児) on the lower right.Framed: Yes. The 2.3" wide and 1" deep carved and painted wood frame measures 13.7" by 17.2". Besides some minor nicks and scratches, the frame is in good overall condition. The frame is much newer than the painting. Additional Comments: Mount Fuji, or Fujisan as the Japanese call it, is Japan's tallest peak on Japan's largest island, Honshu. It is a dormant volcano, with the last eruption in 1707. Mt. Fuji is arguably the most perfect volcanic cone and is often portrayed in art, literature, and religion. Unlike other famous high elevations, it is not a part of a mountain chain and stands alone in all its magnificence. Mt. Fuji's significance to Japan began with the Shinto religion, which believed a deity lived in the crater. Pilgrimages were made to the summit and the crater in honor of the deity. As the pilgrimages grew in popularity, organizations began to support the increasing number of travelers on the mountain. Today, Mt.
