1981 Yamaha SG1500 Vintage Guitar Mahogany Neck Through Oil Stain Finish w/ Case

Location:
Seattle, WA
Description:

Up for sale, a 1981 Yamaha SG1500 in excellent condition and in perfect working order, complete with the original hardshell case. A rare SG series Yamaha model, the SG1500 is unique for having two versions in its short production run. This guitar's feature set represents the second iteration of the SG1500, offered from 1981-84. Distinct among Yamaha's upper tiered SG models, this SG1500 has three-ply maple/mahogany neck through construction, patented as the T-Cross System, ensuring an incredibly stable, resonant, and tonally complex foundation for the instrument. Eschewing the maple top of the SG2000, the SG1500 has solid mahogany body wings, yielding a certain warmth and growl. The humbuckers are detailed and punchy with great harmonic complexity, and unlike earlier SG1500s, these pickups feature dedicated push/push coil splits on the Tone pots. This Yamaha weighs 9lbs 7oz, professionally setup here at Mike & Mike’s Guitar Bar with 10-46 strings, low action, and spot-on intonation. The neck has a slender, fast-feeling C-shaped profile carve with nicely rounded shoulders, measuring .820” deep at the 1st fret and .895” at the 12th. The bound rosewood fretboard is a notably dark cut, featuring pearloid split triangle inlay and a 14” radius, and the medium jumbo fretwire benefits from a level and crown, exhibiting no wear. This guitar plays cleanly up the 24 3/4“ scale with a straight neck and a responsive, optimally-adjusted truss rod, and the bone nut measures 1 11/16” in width. On the multi-ply bound headstock, the original Yamaha-stamped gold tuners turn very smoothly, and the "SG1500" truss rod cover is present as well. All of the electronics function flawlessly with a modern three-way switch installed, as well as one new push/push coil split (the second coil split is original). The humbuckers have original date stamps on their baseplates, translating to the 56th year of the Showa period (1981). The reflector cap knobs are a unique design with ridged grips for quick swells and adjustments. The original bridge and ornate lyre-embossed stopbar are intact, with extensive surface patina on the gold plating. Extremely common with Yamaha gloss finishes of this era, the Oil Stain exhibits significant cloudiness in the clear coat. Beyond the cloudiness, there’s relatively little cosmetic wear on this SG1500 beyond some scuffing on top along the strum path and a handful of tiny nicks on the body as a whole. The smooth gloss on the neck profile is flawless, also exhibiting the same cloudiness as the body (visual and not textural). The original Yamaha-branded black tolex hardshell case is included.
