H. Bettoney “Silva-Bet” Bb clarinet by Cundy Bettoney Co. of Boston, MA. One piece body, not the two-piece version. Serial number S953 and “Pat Pending” engraving indicates it was one of the earliest Silva-Bets, made ca. 1927-1929. Silva-Bet was a premier metal clarinet in its day. Body is perfectly straight; keys move freely, springing seems strong. Note that it will need pads and corks throughout, i.e. it is being sold for restoration. Cosmetically it’s in very good condition, just a couple of minor dings on the bell. The few areas I polished up suggest it will be a beauty with a bit more work. Includes Bettoney tuning barrel that seems to be frozen in closed (not extended) position. Also includes an unusual mouthpiece, stamped “The Fink” – originated in the 1920s in New York; has a metal inlay facing, possibly a long-ago retrofit – see pics. Includes case with Cundy-Bettoney badge, probably original to the instrument; interior of case is in pretty good shape, exterior is rough, and leather handles are long gone.
