1949 HOLTON MODEL 48 Trumpet with Original Case & Lyre. New EASTROCK 7C Mouthpiece (Serial # 198529)This Holton 48 is the final version of the venerable Model 48. It was re-styled in 1949 with the addition of nickel silver tubing and a conventional tuning slide configuration rather than the earlier reversed tuning slide. The valves and valve block are also a new design. This particular Model 48 has a one-piece bell, which is a significant departure from the cheaper two-piece bells that became standard on the model following WW II. Holton had gone back to using two-piece bells on this model by 1951. I know that because I played a '51 for many years. The workmanship quality of the '49 model is excellent. The tone with the new bell is very nice and it has a bit more resistance but still very good response. Intonation is excellent and better IMHO than some pro-models made today.I did an overhaul on this horn a couple of years ago. It has an attractive brushed, gold lacquer finish, is dent free and the valves are properly aligned. There was a dent in the bell bow that left a scar but its hardly noticeable. (See photo # 5). I was planning on having the valves overhauled but that never happened. They are worn from normal use but otherwise undamaged. Compression is still pretty good and the horn sounds great. The valves hesitate unless a thick oil is used. I suggest using Monster Oil "Thicker" or Ultra-Pure Black Label "Classic" valve oil.The horn comes in its original case which is still in amazingly good shape. One latch has a broken spring but otherwise it works fine. Case keys, a music lyre and a new EASTROCK 7C mouthpiece (a decent Bach clone) are included.FREE UPS Ground Shipping within the USA.
