Vintage circa 1950's Martin Factory Employee-Made Tenor Ukulele, Unique and Rare

Location:
Sutton, MA
Description:

Vintage c.1950s Martin Factory Employee-Made Tenor Ukulele, Unique and RareOVERVIEW: I have 3 old ukulele items listed this week. This one is a one-of-a-kind tenor ukulele made in the Martin Guitar factory in Nazareth, PA by an employee during the 1950's. This tenor uke, and also a Style 3 ukulele both came from the same family in the Nazareth area who said that both instruments were made by a now deceased relative (not sure if it was their father or grandfather) in his spare time when he worked at Martin.DESCRIPTION: The uke is 100% original without any alterations other than a new set of strings. It is a tenor size with a string scale of 16-7/8". Unlike the standard Style 3 ukulele that came along with it, this one is a unique creation certainly designed by its builder. As you can see, the binding and center strip on the back are the same materials as used on a D-28, and the tailpiece is the same as used on Martin Style E mandolins. This unique instrument is not signed or marked anywhere that I could see, but I guarantee that this instrument was made in the Martin factory.MATERIALS: The yellowish top appears to be Adirondack Red Spruce, the back is Brazilian Rosewood, the sides & neck are Mahogany, and the fingerboard is Ebony. The ivory nut is clearly Martin work in design and craftsmanship..MEASUREMENTS: The uke measures 24-7/8" in overall length. The round body is 9-1/2" across and 2-1/16" deep. The scale length is 16-7/8" with a 1-5/8" nut width. The neck is not slender and is more like a U-shaped banjo neck.CONDITION: Overall, the uke is in nice condition, but there are some extremely tight hairlines on the back, and the top lacquer finish shows checking. The photos are clearly marked with these imperfections.PLAYABILITY: The frets have no wear at all, and the neck is perfectly straight. The string height at the 12th fret is 3/32" and it plays nicely.INFO FOUND ON UMGF: I found this information regarding Martin factory made instruments on the Unofficial Martin Guitar Forum while researching this instrument:While they are not Martin guitars in the traditional sense, I think of them as a special kind of Martin guitar for the following reasons:1. The employee guitar program was authorized and controlled by the C. F. Martin company.2. They were made in the Martin factory.3. They were made by skilled Martin craftsmen. (If you were an employee building your guitar, you could enlist the help of coworkers for tasks in which you were not as skilled.)4. They were made with Martin woods.5. They were made according to Martin designs and bracing patterns. (But not this one.)6. They play, sound, and feel like Martin guitars.THE CASE: The ukulele does not have a case, but it is already packed very carefully.PLEASE NOTE: This item is already safely and securely packed, so any questions will have to be answered from memory.DISCLAIMER: Please read my text carefully and study the photos closely because they are all important parts of my description.A Buy-It-Now Price is not available / Rest assured, I will not end this auction early / Shipping will be by UPS GroundI'M SO SORRY, THIS AUCTION IS FOR USA BIDDERS ONLY / YOU MUST HAVE AT LEAST 5 POSITIVE FEEDBACKS TO BIDSHIPPING DETAILS:- UPS Ground shipping will be the amount that the eBay shipping calculator shows with no extra charges.- The package size, weight, and distance from Massachusetts determine the shipping price, not me.- Combined shipping is not available.- This item will be carefully packed in a box measuring 34" x 15" x 7" and weighs 4 pounds and 8 ounces.- In most cases your purchase will ship the next business day after payment is made.BIDDER INFO:- Bidders must have at least 5 positive feedbacks in order to bid or your bid will be canceled. - This auction is for USA bidders only.
