Up for sale, one of the rarest of the rare: a D trumpet conversion made by Dom Calicchio for former LA Phil trumpeter and recording artist, Sid Lazar.This horn features a NY Bach 213 bell - the same used by historic Boston Symphony principal, George Mager on his NY Bach C trumpet - for that classic French sound. The body of the horn started its life as a Burbank era ML bore Benge C trumpet that was cut down by the legend himself, Dominic Calicchio. The original Benge pipe was cut down, but ultimately Calicchio put one of his own designs on the horn - you can see from the photos that this was made to fit the original tuning slide, but Calicchio attached his pipe to the original.Valves are unplated, but tight - this was clearly a project horn that underwent several stages of conversion from the original two C trumpets (NY Bach Strad and Burbank ML Benge) to its current state. I had dreams of keeping the BSO theme and creating a modern ‘Tottlephone’ by having a C/D reverse valve tuning slide built, however I have to face the facts that with student loans resuming, I won’t be able to take this horn to where I had hoped. My loss is your gain - plays beautifully now, and could be a remarkable contender for an ultra-rare vintage setup restoration.Sale is for horn ONLY - the cases and furniture in some photos are no part of the sale.
