NO RESERVE!If this were a house we would say it has good bones. I purchased this as a restoration project that I never got to. I think the prior owner had already started to do that - it is raw brass - looks as though the lacquer has been stripped. It is in general good physical condition and after pouring over several resource sites on Olds serial numbers I have decided this is probably a 1941. There is some contradictory information out there about early serial numbers - one site seems to place it in the late 30's but I really think it is a 1941. I have a Super Recording that is a confirmed 1941 with a number about 100 earlier than this horn. So I am pretty confident this is a 1941 horn.It is missing the third slide stopping bar and nuts - also missing the same for the tuning slide. I think I ordered a replacement and if I can find them they will be included in the purchase of this horn. I will also include an Olds mouthpiece. Sorry but there is no case for this horn.There is a patch on the second valve slide - well done. Otherwise I find no significant dings or dents. Slides show little tarnish - well maintained (although there is some scratching that might indicate an attempt to clean using an abrasive but it is pretty minor). The valves look pretty good considering the age of the horn. It could use new springs and felts and such but the valves move freely as do the slides. There is a small dent in the top of the bell tube just past the crook (see photo). There is a little indentation on the top of the third slide elbow - not very apparent - and that seems to be a common issues with Standards and Specials of this era. Not sure what that is all about but I have three Standards and Specials and they all have that, one that I witnessed happen sadly (photo). There is a little "warble" in the lead pipe as well (photo).Despite the apparent condition of the valves and slides I do not get much of a pop when I test compression. A little pop on the third valve. It plays. Sounds a little bright but nothing weird or unusual for a pre WWII horn.A solid start to a quality restoration and when that is done you will have a gem - I love the pre WWII Olds horns.
