The word "rattrapante" comes from the French verb"rattraper," which means "to catch up."Here's how it works:Two chronograph hands: A rattrapante complication features astandard chronograph seconds hand along with an additional chronograph secondshand stacked on top (or sometimes below) it.Independent control: These two hands can be controlledindependently using additional pushers on the side of the watchcase. There's apusher for starting, stopping, and resetting the standard chronograph function,just like a regular chronograph. But there's another pusher specifically forthe rattrapante hand.Catching up the time: With both events starting at the sametime, you press the standard chronograph pusher to start both hands movingtogether. When you want to record the intermediate time for one event, youpress the rattrapante pusher. This freezes the rattrapante hand in place, whilethe standard chronograph hand continues timing. You can then press therattrapante pusher again to "catch up" and synchronize it with thestandard hand. This allows you to read the split time for the first event. Note:It's generally not recommended to use the quick-set date functionon a mechanical watch between roughly 8:30 pm to 3 am. Here's why: Date change mechanism: Most mechanical watches with a datefunction have a mechanism specifically designed to change the date disc aroundmidnight. This mechanism involves gears and levers that engage at a specifictime.Risk of damage: If you try to adjust the date function whilethis mechanism is engaged, you can put stress on the gears and potentiallydamage the movement. This could lead to malfunctioning of the date change oreven require a watchmaker to repair the watch.
