Antigua Casa Sherry-Brenner of Chicago was the importer of Jose Ramirez Guitars in the 1960's and early 1970's. They commissioned the Antonio Hernandis guitars for advanced players and young professionals who could not afford the Ramirez. According to an old price sheet I saw, in 1969, this model guitar sold for about 1/4 of the price of the Ramirez 1a. The guitar for sale is from the period when they were made in Spain. Later, production was moved to Japan. The guitar is in superb condition with only 3 or 4 minor dings. No cracks, separations, warps etc. It looks nearly new.The materials, (especially the top) are gorgeous... the Spruce top has extensive silking and the Rosewood is figured but fairly straight grained. (My experience is that too highly figured Rosewood has a tendency to crack). The bridge has been modified to a twelve hole configuration which allowed the action to be lowered with no loss of volume. Action is 4mm on bass side and 3.5 mm on the treble side at the 12th fret.The guitar has strong volume and a very clear, sweet Spanish tone. It is also quite even in all registers. Scale length is 657 mm.
