Myrsine (Myrsine cubana)Myrsine is a very nice Native bush or small tree, well suited to our area that will grow to from 10' -- 15' tall. It has an erect trunk from 2-3 inches in Diameter with smooth, pale gray bark an bright green leaves from 2' -- 4" long and has an irregular and narrow crown. The tree grows taller than it is wide. As it grows, it will send up pups from its underground roots and become a clumping tree.Myrsine is used as an accent shrub or as a buffer planting and is normally found in moist to seasonally wet areas and is tolerant of most soils. It will do better with some humus in the topsoil. It has a moderate growth rate and has a moderate drought tolerance. It prefers full sun to light shade as its habitat and is tolerant of salt wind but will not tolerate salt flooding.The Myrsine blooms at anytime of the year and bears small blue to black berries that are set on the branches of the previous years growth. Male and female flowers are grown on different plants. It is very cold hardy growing as far north as Lake and Dixie Counties.
