Fine quality oil on canvas painting of the Annisquam River on Cape Anna by well listed New England American artist, Peter Tysver (born 1946). This oil painting measures 16" x 22" unframed. The painting is in very good condition. The painting is signed in the lower left. The painting is signed, titled and dated on the stretcher bar. The painting has a nice gold Impressionist frame with linen liner that measures 21" x 27". Nice painting that is ready to hang! Artist's works have sold for up to $5,500 at auction.Biography from AskArt Archives:Peter Lauren Tysver was born in Gloucester, MA in 1946 into a family of Gillnet fishermen who had emigrated from Michigan. Tysver's love of the sea began as a teenager when he assisted on his father's boat, while his love of painting developed during summer evening visits to the studios of Rocky Neck artists. With money earned, assisting on his father's boat, he purchased his first set of oil paints at a neighborhood yard sale and a canvas board at the Yankee General Store. With these newfound materials in hand (the paint set was a Grumbacher with an instructional guide enclosed on "How to Paint a Still Life"), he attempted his first oil. Benefiting from critiques and encouragement from Raymond Frazier, a Clipper Ship painter in Gloucester, Tysver quickly learned the importance of good draftsmanship. After graduating from Gloucester High School, he attended The Vesper George School of Art, winning the Vesper George Memorial Scholarship in his third year, graduating in 1967. Trained in an academic manner, his instructors included Robert Douglas Hunter, Don Stone, and Sydney Willis. Tysver worked as a commercial artist with the Wilkes Craft Co. of Beverly, MA for a short period of time, and then took a position in 1968 with Oliver Bros doing restoration at the Fenway studios in Boston. Immersed in the tradition of the Boston painters (studios were previously occupied by Frank W. Benson, Joseph De Camp, Lilian Wescott Hale, Ernest Major, and Lilla Cabot Perry), his talent was immediately recognized and he was placed at an easel in-painting and color matching. During the next 15 years he would study and restore the likes of Fritz Hugh Lane, Maxfield Parish, John Singer Sargent, Edmund Tarbell, and William Paxton. Becoming owner and president of the company in 1985, Tysver was now able to relegate many of the daily responsibilities and again refocus on his own artistic endeavors. For him, a painting will begin with numerous thumbnail sketches and then a fully developed study in oil. Following the advice and philosophy of Ives Gammell "bring in a new guy with fresh eyes", he will make his final adjustments and only then will Tysver being the final work. As a member of the North Shore Art Association, the Rockport Art Association, and The Guild of Boston Artists, Tysver has served on the Art Committee and juried for several members' shows. Recently becoming a member of the Oil Painters of America*, his first work submitted for consideration was accepted for their Twelfth Annual National Juried Exhibition of Traditional Oils. He has also exhibited at the Jordan Marsh Annual Exhibit; the Mood of New England at the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston; Arts Atlantic in Gloucester, MA; Temple Beth El Newton, MA; Symphony Hall, Boston, MA; The Brockton Art Museum; and The Boston Athenaeum. Awards include: First Prize at the Brockton Museum Annual Member's show, the Air France Award at the Copley Society, Award for excellence at the Rockport Art Association, and a Juror's Choice Award at the Copley Society.
