LEFT CORNER CLEAR SIGNATURE"Rossken"Because Tramp Art often depicted religious subjects. I believe this to be a painting of Mother Mary pregnant with her son, Jesus Christ.It makes sense that a folk artist would create an uncommon yet utterly human virginal white depiction of a very pregnant Madonna.DIMENSIONSFrame27" x 14" Painting21" x 8.5" 5 Layers of Geometric Hand Carved FramingCONDITION DETAILSThere is a small piece of the frame missing from the bottom of the painting, which rested against the board it's painted on. It's not noticeable and in fact, I didn't see it was missing until I photographed it. The back of frame shows heavy thick oxidation similar to what is present on old early 20th century furniture. It looks like the frame was made (at least partially) from old shipping crates.Examine the photos closely and judge the age by the oxidation.Also, look closely at the old hardware used to make it.I'd date this piece to be at least 75 and perhaps even 100 years old based on that. The frame is handmade and painted. The frame has one little "ding" (last photo).BACKGROUND ART HISTORYTramp art is the whimsical name given to a folk-art form that was popular ca. 1870 to 1940. Boxes, picture frames, religious artifacts, and decorative objects were chip-carved from cigar boxes and, less often, from packing crates. The wood was notch-carved with squares, triangles, and rectangles, then layered to created three-dimensional, boldly geometric pieces.A simple picture frame might go for $100 or less; a small, nicely decorated box for $250; prices for exceptional pieces exceed $2,000. No patterns have ever been found for tramp art. Each piece was individual. Popularized in the late 1800s and early 1900s, the term "tramp art" refers to hand-crafted decorative objects made by layering small wood chips. The edges of the wood were not carved, and the layers were held together with nails or with glue made from animals and heated to become adhesive. Most tramp art items were made with simple tools such as a pocket knife.Contrary to popular belief, tramp art wasn't created by travelers in exchange for food or housing but by local untrained artisans. These artists were not anonymous, but instead celebrated, and often featured in newspapers and given awards.Tramp artists utilized scrounged recycled materials such as cigar boxes, packing crates, and corrugated cardboard. Tramp art was made world-wide, wherever materials were available, but it was more prevalent in areas with long, cold winters as it gave local men something to occupy their time. Although early historians believed that the style began in Europe, pieces seem to have originated in both Europe and the U.S. at the same time. European tramp art can sometimes be identified by the cigar boxes that were used, and many European tramp art pieces incorporate velvet and brass.Tramp art was a predominantly male art form and open to individual interpretation. There are no set patterns or cultural styles, so each piece reflects the artistry and culture of its creator. No two pieces are identical.
