Antique Farmer Capon Caponizing Kit for Rooster / Poultry Castration.J. Renders & Co., Surgl. Inst's, Anat. Designs, 303 4th Av, NY. J. Renders & Co. is the exact same business that made amputation and surgical instruments kits for the Civil War physicians from 1861 - 1865. Up for auction is an antique set (with initial case) that was used for caponizing chickens. The set consists of the original purple lined case, a spreader, retainer and several rusty medical blades. The case lid as what looks like" Farmer Miles Caponizing Kit" inscribed on it. Note: Caponizing has been practiced for countless years, by the Romans for example, in addition to the ancient Chinese. As with castration of creatures, the removal of testosterone-producing glands yields an animal that has better weight gain, is docile, and remains tender up to the day of slaughter. Unlike with creatures, the testicles in male birds are not held externally (quickly accessible), however are deep within the body cavity, tucked up next to the spine. Taking them out is significant surgical treatment,. The kit is in good overall condition for it's age !! Antique / Antiques. Please see all of the photos.
