Borghese Gladiator Bronze Reduction Mechanique by Achille Collas (1795-1859)

Location:
De Leon Springs, FL
Description:

The Borghese Gladiator A Bronze "Reduction Mechanique" by Achille Collas (1795-1859) HISTORY AND DESCRIPTIONThe original Borghese Gladiator is a life size sculpture of a swordsman carved by Agasias of Phesus around 100 BC. It was rediscovered in 1611 in Anzio, south of Rome, in the ruins of a seaside place of Nero. After its discovery it was exhibited at the Villa Borghese. Camillo Borghese sold it to Napoleon Bonaparte in 1807. Theoriginal now resides in the Louvre in Paris.Achille Collas (1795-1859) was a French engineer, inventor, writer, and engraver who developed a way of mechanically creating engravings after medallions and other reliefs. In 1836 he developed a pantograph-like machine that was able to copy sculptures at a smaller scale, known as "reduction mechanique." This invention popularized small sculptures and has been credited with being almost entirely responsible for "the transformation of the bronze industry."In 1838, Achille Collas started a company together with Ferdinand Barbedienne, known as "Societe Collas et Barbedienne," for the production and marketing of reduced copies of sculptures in different materials ranging from plaster and wood to bronze and ivory. When Collas died in 1859, Barbedienne became the sole owner. When Barbedienne died in 1891, his nephew Gustav Leblanc took control. The foundry remained in operation until 1952.This Bronze "Reduction Mechanique," known as The Borghese Gladiator, 19th Century, is after the Hellenistic original in the Louvre. On the top of the rectangular base, near the left heel of the figure, is exclusively the Achille Collas Foundry Mark, absent of any credits to Barbedienne, that reads, "A. LLECOLLAS REDUCTION MECHANIQUE BREVETTE," suggesting it's a reduction created prior to Achille Collas having established partnership with Ferdinand Barbedienne in 1838. On the underside of the base is oxidation consistent with the aging of bronze. Condition overall is good and consistent with age with minor scratches. Left hand of figure has small marring as pictured. This exquisite piece was acquired by the Seller at an Art Estate Sale. It DOES NOT carry authentication documentation. The aforementioned History and Description is as was told to me; with no guarantee or warranty of accuracy. This piece is being Sold As Is with no warranty and no guarantee of any kind whatsoever.SIZE: HEIGHT: From the Base to The Top of the figure’s Left Hand measures 19 inches in HeightDEPTH: The depth of the Base is 7.75 inchesWIDTH: The width of the base is 13.5 inchesDamage During Shipping and Claims Any damage during shipping should be reported within 24 hours of delivery date.
