This chair was acquired by me around 1972 from a neighbor in California who said it was passed on down from his excellent grandma. I had it re-upholstered by a master in the San Francisco Bay Area soon afterwards, at substantial cost. Based on the innards (the construction) of the chair, and the external carving, he advised us that he thought it to most likely be fabricated around the 1880's. That jibes with the next-door neighbor's relative's timeframe. He likewise did some internal wood repair works and re-gluing. He mentioned that laying on the material (we call it terra cotta color) challenged his abilities due to the numerous curvatures.
