Brown (Native Visions, Sun Dogs and Eagle Down) organizes the text into four sections, opening with a piece on the impetus behind collections begun in the 18th and 19th centuries along the Northwest Coast of North America, including trade and the politics emerging from Western interests in the region. A second chapter details Spanish expeditions and the resulting collections and discoveries in the 18th century, a third explores the ceremony and cultural significance of the art and craft, and a fourth emphasizes the functions of Northwest Coast art and its meaning within the religious, political, and economic structure of the society that produced it. The beautifully reproduced illustrations, including masks, amulets, combs, and similar artifacts, reproduce anthropomorphic and zoomorphic images.
