Description:

BRAND NEW BOOK, still sealed in original factory shrink-wrap. "Spirits of the Water: Native Art Collected on Expeditions to Alaska and British Columbia, 1774-1910" edited by Steven C. Brown. This book was published at $45 (out of print at University of Washington Press). The art objects in this book are gathered from international museums and private collections. They are among the oldest known works of Northwest Coast Indian Art. "The breadth of this work is nothing short of amazing. This book is highly recommended for clarity and variety of the reproductions as well as the informative essays." -- Independent Publisher 207 pages, softbound, new, in original factory shrink-wrap. 9.5 inches x 11.75 inches. Amazing photographs of northwest coast art objects from the Spanish Expeditions (1774-1792); English Expedition (Cook, 1778); Russian Expeditions (1778-1890); North American Expeditions (1867-1910). From the Library Journal: "This intriguing book accompanies an exhibit of the same name that was planned by the Fundaci n "la Caixa" in Barcelona. Brown (Native Visions, Sun Dogs and Eagle Down) organizes the text into four sections, opening with a piece on the impetus behind collections begun in the 18th and 19th centuries along the Northwest Coast of North America, including trade and the politics emerging from Western interests in the region. A second chapter details Spanish expeditions and the resulting collections and discoveries in the 18th century, a third explores the ceremony and cultural significance of the art and craft, and a fourth emphasizes the functions of Northwest Coast art and its meaning within the religious, political, and economic structure of the society that produced it. The beautifully reproduced illustrations, including masks, amulets, combs, and similar artifacts, reproduce anthropomorphic and zoomorphic images. A glossary of terms provides brief familiarity with the numerous Native American groups that inhabited the coast at the time, such as the Aleut, Chilkat, Chinook, Kwakiutl, Tlingit, Nootka, and Yup'ik. This excellent text is suitable for both public and academic libraries.--John E. Dockall, Bernice P. Bishop Museum, Honolulu" I can mail this book for $12.35 by flat-rate priority, or $5 by media mail (3-5 weeks, faster if you are in Alaska). call 907-789-XXXX
