Fine Old Violin of the Hopf School, Late 18th / Early 19th Century ***NORESERVE*** Thisinstrument is an excellent candidate for restoration. The body isgenerally in very good condition, despite the rather heavily weathered andmarked varnish to the top. There are three glued and closed cracks on thetop, though none have been cleated. One of the cracks is in the bass bararea adjacent to the fingerboard, but there are no soundpost cracks. There are a couple of small, closed rib cracks by the lower block. Theback is free of cracks, and in good condition. The main area of concern forrestoration of this instrument will be the neck and scroll. The neck isbroken and has been haphazardly repaired (see pictures). It is capable ofmaintaining strings at this time, but it will need to be entirely replaced fora proper restoration. The scroll has also been haphazardly revarnished atsome point. It is a really interesting and unique scroll, but a decisionwill have to be made whether or not to salvage it. Thisinstrument will be shipped along with a complete setup (pegs, tailpiece, chinrest, strings, bridge, soundpost) including an excellent bridge and sound postmade by Christopher White in Boston, MA. The instrument can be strung upand played as is, though again, the neck is not reliable.
