French Horn CONN 8D - Nickel Silver Alloy - Large bore

Location:
Columbus, OH
Description:

This is a Double (F/B Flat) CONN French Horn. A beautiful 8D that was made in 1978. Serial Number is GJxxxx. Some of the lacquer is worn in areas where a horn player normally holds the horn while playing. Inside the bell there is some discoloration that could not be removed by cleaning (polishing). Otherwise, the quality of the lacquer is excellent. It still has the bright CONN 8D sheen that makes these horns stand out under bright stage lights. This one looks like it has just come from the factory; a brilliant silver with no hint of sun damage. I hope that the photos provide some perspective. They were taken with my 9 megapixel Ipad. (The lacquer that CONN uses is epoxy-based and is incredibly durable.) However, when left stored in a sunny environment this type of finish will eventually begin yellow; (no yellowing here.) Aside from that, there are only several small dents that could not be captured by my Ipad camera. The valves all create a solid "pop" when the slides are removed without pushing down the key. (Most horn players consider this test to show that the valves do not leak.) In my experience playing this horn, the tone quality is warm and smooth and the response is open even when played softly. (Think OBERON OVERTURE.) When played at 'ff', the sound opens up in the tradional 8D way without loosing any of the luster. I had no problem playing this horn in tune after adjusting all of the slides to their normal settings. The valve slides are tight but easily adjusted. The case is solid and appears to be in near-new condition. (It is not a CONN plastic case.) The valves use the original string-type mechanism. If the new owner is a young player, the keys can easily be restrung to fit someone with small hands. As it is set up now, the keys are set at exactly the right height to fit my large hands. This horn came from the estate of a player who had purchased it new in 1978 and had played it until his death two years ago. Now it is looking for its next owner. It has a great CONN 8D sound and is ready to move on. I hope that the photos convey how beautiful this horn is. On a personal note, as any horn player knows, the mouthpiece is very important. And what works on one horn may not work on another. With that in mind, I would like for the new owner to consider the mouthpiece that I am using on this horn. I play a SCHMEID #11 mouthpiece. It is a perfect match on this 8D and likewise, on other 8Ds that I have played. In any case, a similar mouthpiece would be a good place to start. Good Luck.
