Mabel Irene LockerbyExquisite tonal painting of a sleepy Canadian town at the beginning of a gentle snowfall, oil on board, by highly regarded Canadian artist Mabel Irene Lockerby. This exceptionally collectible painting was painted between 1900s - 1920s by the artist. Signed lower right. Art is in excellent condition. Frame, most likely original to the painting, is in good but worn and rubbed condition commensurate with age. An antique, partial Montreal fine art gallery tag is on the back of the painting. Frame: 11.5”w x 14.5”hPainting: 9” x 12”Mabel Irene Lockerby (1887-1976) is a renowned Canadian painter whose style is characterized by rich colors, visible brushstrokes and a strong sense of composition, tone and design. She is best known and collected for her intimate tonal scenes depicting winter landscapes and village life and more barren, haunting images. These works use darker shades of color and exposed, bare and gloomy tinted landscapes often hued in bluish-greys and darker shades of grey. Her art in this style has regularly sold between $10-20k at auction and fine art galleries. Her most acclaimed painting of this style, The Haunted Pool, 12” x 15,” realized a grand total of over $40,000 at a Sotheby Montreal auction.This work is exceptionally painted in the same style, tone and atmosphere, medium and size. It will be fully insured, packed professionally and ready to hang in that special spot in your home.ABOUT THE ARTISTLockerby studied at the Art Association of Montreal with William Brymner and Maurice Cullen winning two awards, one for her drawing in the "antique class" (1902) and another for composition (1911). In 1926 the National Gallery of Canada purchased one of her works. She joined the Canadian Group of Painters in 1939 and was a member of the Contemporary Arts Society of Montreal. Her work was exhibited in the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley Park, Wembley, England in 1924 and 1925, at the 1939 New York World's Fair and at the 400th Anniversary Exhibition in Sao Paulo, Brazil in 1954. The National Gallery of Canada has four of her pieces in its collection, including her painting Early Winter.ABOUT THIS PAINTINGThis painting depicts the beginnings of a winter storm as twilight draws near in a small Quebec town circa 1900-1920s. A workhorse is tethered to a sleigh against the background of an old country home. Snow has begun to fall and collect on the boughs of the trees, the eaves of the house and the railings of the old wooden fence. The day is coming to an end. The sun has cast long, dark shadows of the sleigh and horse upon the snow-covered soil. Not a human is in sight, and there is no light on in the house. All is silent. It is a serenely beautiful composition with darker, gloomy undertones representative of her best work.
