Optical quality from Joe Turner Photography,. Flickr: http://www.flickr.com/photos/joeturnerimages/. Never ever expected the Tokina to be that best Image Quality to be honest !!I believe the review states everything ... no-one is going to put their neck on the block and state that the Tokina is much better than the Nikkor but in regards to performance/cost it's probably close. Best way to find out is try them and see.Find any MTF chart or testimonials of this lens and you'll soon discover that this lens is sharp. Personally I think the lens is a terrific entertainer under all shooting conditions. The Nikkor counterpart is more costly not so much due to the fact that it could be a little bit sharper as a 300mm prime, however for its ability to produce sharp results even when used with TC's. This is since it has even more solving power than the Tokina. I have actually also attempted both Nikon teleconverters (customized) and the TC-14E produces crisp and sharp outcomes large open however the 2x is a little soft. This is a constraint of the lens and has less to do with the converter. Undoubtedly the customized Nikon teleconverters offer only manual focusing. Both the Kenko 1.4 x and Nikon TC14E (transformed) work terrific with this lens and both perform the very same. Their optical quality is great large open but closing down one stop will offer you significantly much better outcomes with even more contrast. Sharpness: Excellent at all apertures with best performance in between f/4 and f/11. When possible shooting at f/4 will guarantee much better color, contrast and sharpness, you can shoot fret complimentary at f/2.8 but. In general, extremely sharp in the center and degrades gracefully in the direction of the edges on the full 35mm frame. At f/5.6 and f/8 image quality and resolution are merely exceptional. On the D300, from f/8 onwards diffraction ruins the finer information so beware however D3 users can make use of f/16 max. Worth noting, is that the sharpness is constant throughout the focusing array of the lens. Chromatic aberrations: Like a great deal of Tokina products, purple fringing in high contrast locations is present and sometimes can be visibly aggravating. But the majority of it can be fixed in post processing. This has to do with the only major grievance regarding this lens. Flare on the other hand is non-existent. Surprisingly, when shooting a sundown the Tokina carries out quite well. Its optical design keeps internal reflections to a minimal. Shoot with an intense sun in the frame and the lens will certainly produce excellent results without any flare or ghosting. Vignetting: Surprisingly, even utilizing a full frame movie body, this lens does not suffer much from light fall-off. There is a tip of light fall-off at the corners when shooting large open, but on the DX format cameras there is no light fall off to talk about. Distortion: On both the DX and FX format cams there is no distortion to stress over.
